A bit of a complaint about over priced stuff

Why I might stop buying GW products (at least at retail price)

As this section title suggests I am seriously considering slowing or stopping my support for my local GW store. This is a direct result of price changes with items that  I considered the last of the appropriately priced items. I am talking about the troop boxes for Lord of the rings plastics. Not too long ago these boxes were sold for  around 25.00 and included 24 plastic miniatures. This was a good deal for a GW product (other companies can and often do better.) at the last price hike they jumped to 33.00 and that hurt a bit but what happened next took the cake.  recently I was in my local GW and was looking over the LOTR mini’s in anticipation of the new Hobbit release and noticed the troop boxes were smaller. They are now sold in groups of 12 to match the current unit construction rules. My first thought was ok so they have decided to make a cheaper set that allows for a unit in a  box just buy a leader and off you go (Very old school GW if you know what I mean.) Imagine my surprise when I turned the box over and saw the going price. 24.75!  This is the same price 24 of them were just a year ago. I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous. BTW: the new Hobbit Orc hunters are 35.00 for just 12. Wow.

Another reason for stoppage is the New Hobbit stuff. All of the new stuff seems to be more expensive than the rest of the stuff from this company. Take the “Rules Manual”  (GW employees are not allowed to call it a rule book) is coming in at 85.00 (10.00 more than the 40K and Fantasy rules books) and is considerably smaller.  The Boxed game (special edition) is 125.00 as opposed to the 6th ed “DV” special set that sold for 107.00 just a few months ago.  It goes on… The white council 75.00 for 4 miniatures (are they made of gold?) pretty much all of the Hobbit stuff is priced higher than LOTR stuff and most of it is Fail cast. I am pretty sure the LOTR stuff will soon be matching the Hobbit and have another price hike soon.

All this and I am hearing rumors that the new Hobbit system is being made “Kid friendly” taken as a whole it does not bode well for me.

GW stuff is already inflated (in all their systems) and as stated before other companies have proven that they can do it better. I feel like I am rapidly approaching my price point limit and GW does not seem to be close to stopping with unneeded price increases. Because of this I am seriously thinking of abandoning my local GW store and the website and just stick it out for a week or two longer and get stuff through a 3rd party distributor as a big discount. I am also rapidly becoming a big fan of alternate miniatures from these “up and coming” (and well established) companies.

I guess I will wait and see what the new Hobbit stuff is like before I decide.

Commission Work

Hello All,

I'm here today with pictures of some Commissions I have done in 2012.I don't really do that many as my own stuff would never get done if I did. When I do I try to give it my all. First off I will start with an Infinity model.

First up-Infinity Rebot

Assembled with an apoxie culpt base

All painted up and ready for play
Up Next- Infinity Cargo Containers

Good Cover
From here we move to Dystopian Wars: Covenant of Antarctica

Here is my test pattern- Daedalus Class Large Flyer

Finally we move to the Warhammer Fantasy Skaven Army I painted in 2010. This time around I it was a Vermin Lord conversion  made from the Plastic Daemon kit and the Current (Still) Vermin Lord model. I think this is one of my better conversions.

The head is from the old Vermin kit the body of a Daemon Prince and hair of Apoxie Sculpt

The Base is made entirely from Apoxie Sculpt

Weapon is a kit bash from the Daemon prince

And here it is Painted:

G.B.S Update

Hello All,

RGH Here. I finally got a chance to break out the old Air Brush and do some work on my Brass Scorpion test piece. You remember this and this?

I have continued the steps from Imperial Armor Painting Master Class Vol: 2. In this step I added red lines to the inner part of each section. these will be part of the "Molted" effect I am shooting for. I think it came out pretty good. Take a look.

I used Foundation Red from GW
Up next the fun part! Time for the Timiya clear paints. This stuff is interesting it says "acrylic" on the pot but not any acrylic I have ever seen. first off it stinks! As in a strong chemical smell. second it takes a special thinner to thin it down to an airbrush consistency. That being said they are some pretty cool paints. They coat well and dry quick and work exactly as advertised.

Per the IA book I started with red and applied several coats in around an hour. here is what it looked like.

I next went with several coats of Orange that slightly changed the overall color as seen here

Lastly I went with Blue. I had my doubts but it actually brought the parts together. Check it out.

Well that's where I am now and I think so far so good!

Let me know what you think.

PS: Here is a short video of me in a towel...
Just kidding- Actually it's a short video of a nifty light effect I noticed with the test piece.

Vive La Republique (Dystopian War update)

Hello all ,

RGH here with a Dystopian war update. For those of you waiting for an update on the Great Brass Scorpion fear not as one is forth coming (just as soon as I have time to break out the airbrush again.) I have been spoken to by several folks, who are kind enough to read my stuff, and told that there have not been enough updates in recent months. It was easy to ignore when the NOVA was on the horizon but now I have no real excuse... So here is are some pictures of my recent works.

A while back I had a post where I showed off my then recent French fleet for Dystopian wars. I decided to add a fleet carrier to round out the force and then went to work painting it. I finished the escorts early on and posted them here. As of this past weekend the rest of the fleet is done and ready for viewing. So without adding too much more to this here they are!

First up Group Shots

Fleet Carrier

Battle Ships
Magenta MKII

Magenta MKI

Well that's all I have time for today. Let me know what you think...

Scorpion Project Update

Hello all,

I am back with an update on the Great Brass Scorpion project. Last time I showed you the plastic card test piece I made to try out the paint scheme FW used on theirs in Imperial Armor Masterclass V2.
Well I have had an opportunity to add a few layers done as close as possible to the FW style.

After a prime of Black I painter the piece red using the Old Foundation M. Red.

Then As per the instructions I painted the piece  Brass (Vallejo)

Once dried I used my airbrush to paint lines and splotches of silver in the recessed spaces.

The next step will be to add more lines using shades of red  so that a later step will bring them all together.

Keep watching.
