The new Blog

Check out my new Blog http://roadtonova.blogspot.com/

Don't worry the RHG isn't going anywhere. I just feel that NOVA articles need special attention and should have their own Blog. The two Blogs are designed to be overlapping and complimenting to one another.

If you have time please check it out and add yourself as a follower if you feel inclined.

Skavenblight Gazette_ Check out pages 16 & 17

Hello All,

The latest issue of Skavenblight Gazette is out now!
Issue 11.

It was while looking at these guys (Back around issue 3) that I discovered Podhammer the first Warhammer podcast I ever listened to. From there it expanded to 40K Radio, Worlds end Radio, Eternal Warriors (as DLT), The 11 th Company and through them the Gamers lounge. As well as a host of others over the last few years.

So without finding the Skavenblight Gazette my podcast experience might have been vastly different...

So anyway back to the focus of this post.

Check Out Pages 16 and 17 before you look at any other part of this top notch publication.

You will see some fantastic creations for various Skaven Armies one or two may surprise you.

Thank you "Ratling the Mad"

Enjoy

Necromunda Battle Report (Test)

Here it is ...

My first attempt at a video battle report.

It is a little rough and I need to learn my software a little better but I think it has promise.

BTW: The report ends in the middle of turn 2. (The Battery died)

The game only lasted until mid turn 3 when The Orlocks bottled out leaving the Goliath's Victorious!!!!

I want commentary on this one and any advice would be welcome.

I already know the sound changes from the first segment to the second :)

A short Update.

Hello all,

This has been a poor week in gaming since my last post.
Number of games attempted= 1
Number of games played= 0

But no worries. I had a great time hanging around the GW store last Friday night. I met a few new people (always good), talked a lot of painting (one of my favorite subjects), And got to tell some of my favorite funny stories (usually involving "DA" moments from the past.)

Note: One interesting thing I did see was a kid wearing a pair of those shoe/roller skate hybrids. I used to see them all the time but the last few years they seemed to be on the decline. When you see kids skating around on these things have you ever wanted to just stick you foot out and give natural selection a hand? I commented about this at the shop and was surprised to find that the same thought was on most of our minds as the child scooted by for the 3rd time in 10 minutes. Interesting...

------------------------------------------

On the Friday before the NOVA open I picked up a copy of Malifaux from Victory comics in Falls Church. I have been reading it and think I have a handle on the rules. I don't have any of the miniatures nor a Fate deck yet. I Like the Guild and Outcasts so far but I think each faction is really cool.

I am hoping I can get my wife to play and rekindle her enjoyment of tabletop war-games. I want to avoid her becoming "Mundane" at any cost.

To anyone reading this who also plays Malifaux any advice would be appreciated.

Painting

  • This weeks painting project- Land Raider.
  • I am finally painting my Land raider Redeemer
  • I finished the Dwarf "Goblin Hewer" and plan to run it as a grudge thrower.
  • I assembled the rest of my Chaos Warriors/Knights last week and used them to bulk up my already established units.
  • I now have 5 units of 20 warriors not counting "Chosen"
  • I have 4 units of 10 Knights including 1 with lances.
Well that's enough for now. I hope to get a game in this Friday but if not I know the conversation will be worth the trip.

My Day at the NOVA open

I showed up to the event at around 10:30 AM. I am not sure as I left my Blackberry in the car so did not look at it when I got inside. Round 1 was almost over when I got there. Straight away I went to see my friends who were participating in the event. Both were playing in the Fantasy event. One was playing Skaven and the other Lizards.

After saying my “hello’s” I wandered around the event taking pictures. There were a (censored) load of cool Armies for both Fantasy and 40K. Several stood out,

While I was wandering around I saw two fellows wearing 11th Company T-shirts. I decided to go over introduce myself. It turns out I was in the presence of Neil and the gang :). I hung out with them for the rest of the break between rounds 1 and 2. They are a pretty cool bunch and I hope to one day get a chance to hang in their neck of the woods.

Shortly before Round 2 I almost literally walked into Jay from The Gamers’ Lounge. He is a truly BIG dude; both in size and general coolness. I talked with him for a few minutes but Round 2 was about to start and gamer etiquette demands that you don’t disturb a gamer while he is playing a game so when the round was underway I wandered off…

Jays Howling Griffins!

While Round 2 was going on I checked how my friends were doing and managed to run into several other friends most of which were working for the event. Most of them were employees or former employees of GW. Many were judging armies or taking scores. While talking to one of them I heard a voice I recognized. I turned and did not see anyone I knew. Then I saw the name tag. It was Bill from the Gamers Lounge. We had a short conversation but he had to get back to work so off I went again…

I was getting tired at this point so I looked for a quiet place to sit down. While on this quest I met
Casie from the inner circle Gaming club. We spent about a half hour talking about the club and what they wish to accomplish in the next few years. All the while Casie was painting some really Cool Valks (6 or 7 of them.) I plan to look them up and learn more.

After the second round was over lunch break was called. I spoke with my friends and found that both had lost 2 in a row and would be playing at the last two tables :(
It is my hope that the last two games were the most enjoyable since the pressure was off. :)

I was invited to have lunch with Neil, Kelly, and Pat over at the “food Court” (Actually 4 or 5 fast food restaurants clustered in a parking lot near the Expo center) We went to separate places and met up at Pat’s Van to eat and talk Hobby. Good Times.

Afterwards Round three got underway and I was off again for more picture taking madness. While wandering around I met up with Bill again and managed to get a picture.

About an hour later I was getting pretty tired. I am not as young as I think I am and my body lets me know every once in a while. I was hanging around the Fantasy tables giving moral support to my friends when my wife called to ask me how things were going. This was the fist time she called all day and I was glad to hear her voice. I told her it was a blast but I was getting worn out. She suggested that I meet up with her for dinner then a movie. We had a great time Saturday night; Dinner at Outback and a chance to see “the Expendables.” All in all Saturday was a memorable occasion.

recent works

Hello All,

This has been a slow week for me Hobby wise. I only managed to get a hand full of models finished. I did Manage to get a Fantasy game last Saturday. I brought out my Dwarfs and took on a tough WOC force at 1500 points. we played the full 6 turns and at the end I managed to lose. I had a good time. The Purple sun is a beast of a spell vs. Dwarfs. :(

Here is a shot of the battle

Recently I managed to get another of the splash releases for 8th ed.

Welcome the Bear!!!

SKAVEN PROJECT UPDATE (Part 8)

There have been sightings of previously unseen Rat things in the cities of men. The only known image of these dangerous creatures is below...

I managed to get the Night runners unit completed a few days ago. They came out OK but I didn't build them just painted them. I could not get a good pic to come out so I decided to have a little fun with it.

Lastly The Great and powerful Lord Thanquol and Bone Ripper have been painted but still need to be hit with Dul coat.

Enjoy!!!

A Gift from the Warboss

The new 8th ed rule book complete with new FAQ's already out- who would have thunk it.

There must be a new Sheriff in Nottingham.

There is a section in the new rule book that that that talks about using a GM. To many this may seem like a new concept but actually the concept of a rule judge goes waaaaaay back. Long ago before recorded history ;p -miniatures were used to to teach tactics. Students (Players) would move the troops around and a Judge (GM) would tell them the outcome of their decisions.

The Use of a GM to Ref a war game used to be standard back in early editions of Warhammer and 40K. In fact it is mentioned as the norm in the original Rogue trader. It has simply fallen out of fashion. At least till now.

In my old gaming group (I'm talking 4th ed WH here) we almost always used a GM. It seemed to make the game run better. It also made any night where we had an odd number of players less awkward.

I always liked being the GM for my group. I enjoyed the ability to control the situation and make up interesting scenarios and be able to modify them on the fly to keep the game going. this was the same in RPGs as well as tabletop Wargames.

Recently, the Warboss sent me a link to a some GM tropes called "Grand Tabletop Rules List" I felt that many apply to both Tabletop wargames and Roleplaying games. Enjoy them as they are pretty funny.

Thanks Warboss!

Dioramas

Dioramas

Over the last 5 or 6 years I have done a few Dioramas as Christmas gifts for folks. Most of them have been for my in-laws. Since I recently paid them a visit I thought I would take the opportunity to snap a few Photos of them. Note that these have nothing to do with Warhammer nor 40K.
Enjoy the pics

"Dragon Slayer"

This is the first one I did back in 2004 for my Father in-law (then my Girlfriends dad) It depicts a lone knight Battling a red dragon with his back to a cliff. I was only able to get one half way decent snapshot before the camera battery died.

"The Horror of Yig"

This one was done in in 2005 Christmas for my now Brother in law. It depicts a summoning ritual interrupted by adventurers. The figures are a mix of older and newer miniatures. The Serpent men, Candles, Sacrifice, and the Wizard are Reaper. The Fighter is an old Mitherel Lord of the Rings Miniature and the Monk is Ral-Partha (I think)

I think My more recent stuff is an improvement...

I took a break a few years off from Dioramas until 2009 when I decided to do three mini Dioramas for My wife's family. I know I had already done 2 for them but the misses thought it would be a nice gift and would mean more than just buying something for them. So I give you "The Wizard's Circle", "Dragon Rider", and "Escape from Hell"

"The Wizard's circle" (Wizard Porno Movie)

Special Note about this figure: The Misses painted this one. She did such a good job that most folks can't tell which of the three was done by her. I hope to display more of her work in the future.

I really like the way the Dragon came out on this one.

"Dragon Rider"

"Escape from Hell"

I like these Pictures but I had some trouble getting the face detail to show up. I had light issues as well as no good place to brace the Camera. I wanted to include them for posterity. The model looks better in reality.

I hope you liked them...

Podcasts and Progress and Pics "Oh my"

Hello all,

Earlier this week I sent a message to the fellows at the Gamers lounge attempting to make contact. Yesterday I got a reply from HuronBH. It was really positive and made my day. I can really get behind a podcast that will actually make a point to contact listeners and make them feel welcome. Great work guys! Jay even added me to his Blog roll. :)

If you have not checked them out please do so. They rock!
------------------------

As of today I have 4 followers, which is 3 more than I thought I would ever get. I feel like this may be the start of something bigger than the sum of its parts.

As usual Here are two more pics from my collection

A converted Space Hulk figure done up as Wolf Guard and The commander of the "Emperor's Dragons" Vladimir Tepess (These have been up on other sites as well)

The first post

This is the first in what is hoped to be a long line of interesting posts. The Rogue General Hunter is all about the Warhammer, 40K, LOTR, and WOTR hobby. I have been playing with and painting miniatures for almost 25 years.

More to come.... (I have to get back to work)

Its a little later now and I am back. As I was saying, I painted my first model in 1986around the same time I was learning to play D&D. I used Testors Model paint and had no idea what I was doing...
I was so proud of that little Barbarian.

About a week later my little sister got a hold of it and (using my testors black) repainted it for me!

After that I piddled around with minis for a few years painting this or that for D&D, Star frontiers, Traveler, Battletech or whatever was needed. I did not discover water based acrylic paints until 1989 when my buddy (and primary DM of our gaming group) bought a Ral Partha paint set.

At first I was resistant to change. but after he gave me a set of Primary colors for my birthday I was hooked. My painting did not get any better but at least I did not need thinner any more.

in 1993 I discovered Warhammer Fantasy and 40K! My first 40K experience will be the subject of a future post. As to fantasy I started with Undead. I bought a lot of Skeletons and painted them using flesh tones (its an interesting effect.) In those days there were no Vampire counts just the Undead Horde. my Undead were a force to be reckoned with. At least until the first time I used them. After a while I discovered the Empire and have been a loyal subject of Karl Franz ever since.

After I started playing Warhammer my painting skill improved (mostly through repetition.)
since then I have attempted to learn as much as I can about the hobby (Focusing mostly on painting) I have moved into modeling and conversions as well as dabbling in scratch builds.

I think at this time the focus of this Blog should be painting, modeling and conversions with a smattering of amusing stories and General BS.

So if the above amused you stay tuned there should be more to come.

Just to get the ball rolling I am including 2 projects fro 2009 both were for contests at my local GW store.
