Hobby Update May (pic heavy)

Hello All,

I know it's been a while. The NOVA Open season is in full swing so getting posts out has been a challenge. Anyway I have been getting a lot done (Mostly for NOVA Open) but did manage to find some time to get my own stuff worked on.

If you have not been following what we are working for this years NOVA Open you should go look- I'll wait...

Road To NOVA

Back?... Good.

I will start with the figures. A very small number. :(
I like the way they turned out. :)

Steam Tank

I have had this model for years. It is a Steam Tank from some old game GW crushed back in the 90's.
While simple it gave me a chance to test some weathering techniques like chipped paint and corrosion.

D&D

I Painted up these Reaper figures for a D&D game. They are supposed to be relatives from the same Noble house (that is why the colors match)

Balthazar Gelt

I picked this guy up when I bought the Nagash End Times Book since he is a major player (dupe) through part of it. I like the how the Pegasus muzzle turned out.

 Tau Riptide

This was assembled for me by the Assembly Linguist  back before he started it.
I figured it was time to start painting.

Game Boards (terrain sets)

I have been working on several terrain sets for games I play or want to play. the big one has been the modular Goblin Town board that I was able to finish and play on just before the end of May

Walkways

I used three Goblin town sets from GW and used their scale (and coffee sticks) to make more walkways of my own.

Extras

Using wood skewers and game pieces from a board game I added interesting barriers and LOS blocking/obscuring elements.

From the game "Grind"
 The Hills

The hills are basic "step" design used for decades because of the ease of use the flat surfaces provide.
The rippled effect on the sides is due to a failure of the sealant I used to protect the foam from the spray paint I primed with. I liked the effect so I repeated it for all the hills in the set. My wife refers to it as the "Happy accident"

Finished Hills

Here are some shots of the painted hills. I used Vallejo airbrush paints to make get them looking like this.

The sniff test

Good to go!
Layout pictures

From time to time I would set out the table elements to see how they were shaping up. It also told me what I might be missing or have too much of.

The walkway at the bottomis 21" long

The Skewer barracades

The underside of the bridge is a
5 Gal paint stir stick

Game Day

I got a chance to actually play on the board last Friday Night at the Springfield GW store vs. Devon of the DCHL. It was a learning game for me as I am quite rusty. He took it easy on me. I had a lot of fun.

I have learned to hate bats

Well That is what I did in May.

What do you think?

Peak Performance Event (Attack Wing)

Hello All,

This past Sunday I ran the attack wing event “Peak Performance.” Once again the turnout was small so we decided to make a day of it and throw the normal strictures out the window.

The setup

Cool dice tower made by one of the players using a 3D printer

He really designed it himself!

Round 1 used the scenario proper. The fleets looked good as both limited themselves to a single faction for their ships (upgrades were multi faction)  even though this was not a requirement.  Player 1 used 2 Reman Warbirds and a Romulan Scout Ship while player 2 used a Dominion fleet with a Jem'hadar Battle Cruiser, Cardassian Keldon Class, and two squadrons of Hideki fighters. The battle was a game of cat and mouse until the Romulan scout ship got separated from its fellows and was destroyed in a cross fire from the two squadrons of fighters. Before it was over it was destroyed two more times. (scenario specific rules allowed ships to “resurrect” throughout the battle.) allowing the Dominion player to win 3-0

Round two both players decided to use  new fleets- Player 1 switched to a Federation Fleet consisting of the USS Enterprise (Refit), The USS Voyager, and a squadron of Federation Fighters. Player 2 requested to use the ringer fleet that I designed. It consisted of a mixed bag of ships and felt a little out of place with what others created. It had the Species 8472 Bioship Alpha with Captain Spock, The USS Enterprise D with  Khan in the command chair and another Romulan Scout ship with General Martok in command.

Leapfrog

This battle was an exercise in what can go wrong in maneuvering. The Ringer fleet hit the planet in turn three and the entire fleet “Bumped” into each other causing the whole side to get no actions that turn! While that was going on the Federation fleet played leapfrog with Voyager and Enterprise and kept bumping as well. It was hilarious. In the end the Federation Player won by destroying the 8472 Bioship while only losing the Enterprise. Basically it came down to who lost the more expensive ship.

Planet bumping!

For round three we decided to do a “free for all” each of us took one ship with a 50 point cap and played the starter set 3 player “Triple threat” match. I decided to go with Bioship alpha (with a few changes from the ringer fleet design) while player 1 went for the Scimitar (Reman Warbird) and player Two went back to the Jem'hadar Battle Cruiser. The Battle cruiser went down by turn three as it took heavy fire from two turns of shooting by my Bioship. The Scimitar skated around and managwer to hit me hard knocking off all of my remaining shields and three hull. I turned hard and fled giving me time to regenerate my ship’s hull back to full before engaging again. It was at this point that I failed to out guess my opponents maneuver and ended up face to face rather than on his 6 o’clock. I fired knowing that he had a card that would allow him to shoot a second time if my shooting did any damage. Time was running out and his initial barrage took me down to 2 hull. I was hoping for to do enough damage to take him out first . unfortunately I did not and his free return fire blasted the Bioship to space dust locking player 1 as the winner of the day!

It was a glorious battle and “a Good day to die”

Warning... Attack Wing Post! (Date Changed!)

NOW May 17th noon to five PM

Hello All,

I will be running the next OP for Star Trek Attack wing next Sunday. The event is focused on one of my favorite episodes from The Next Gen series: Peak Performance.

"With the Borg threat in mind, Starfleet stages a war-game simulation pitting Captain Picard and theEnterprise against Commander Riker and the eighty-year-old starship Hathaway. However, when the Ferengi suddenly attack, the Enterprise is crippled forcing Picard into a seemingly no-win situation." Read the full synopsis HERE.

The Event will be held at my normal stomping grounds Comics and Gaming Fairfax.

Comics & Gaming Fairfax
10385 Main Street
Fairfax, VA 22030
Telephone:      703.865.8110
E-mail: cgoffx@gmail.com

Here is the event info from Wizkids:

Peak Performance

In order to bring its forces to their peak performance level now that the Borg are an imminent threat, Starfleet has issued orders for all of the ships in its fleet to run battle simulations, creating scenarios in which newer, superior ships are battling older, weaker ones. In these simulations, all weapon systems are to be rendered harmless to prevent any actual damage from occurring. The Federation has enlisted the aid of the Zakdorn, a race known for their battle strategy, to help them in this endeavor.
Sirna Kolrami
The Zakdorn Master Strategist Sirna Kolrami will run the simulations and assess the performance level of all the “combatants.”

Specific Rules for this event:
1. 120 Points per fleet (From the Instruction packet)
2. Minimum 3 Ships per fleet
4. The suggested 50 Point cap for ships waved for this OP
3. Resources are allowed (Except the one for this OP) following the Normal rules
4. Other than that use the construction rules from page 21 of the Rule Book
5. Admirals Orders are not allowed for this OP
6. Special rules from “Peak performance” (Primarily how destroyed ships are handled) -  http://wizkids.com/attackwing/star-trek-attack-wing-peak-performance-episode-organized-play-kit/

For Example:

BATTLE SIMULATION

In this event, players’ ships combat each other in a battle simulation. In this simulation, ships do not actually get destroyed. During the battle, all damage is recorded normally. If a ship would be destroyed do the following instead:
  • Remove the ship from the play area and place it on top of its Ship Card.
  • Remove all Damage Cards assigned to the ship and shuffle them into the damage deck.
  • Remove all Disabled Upgrade Tokens from all of the ship’s disabled cards.
  • Remove any Upgrade Cards discarded by the ship from the game.
  • Remove any cards that did not start the game on the ship from the game.
  • Place a Critical Hit Token on the ship’s Ship Card (see RETURNING SHIPS below).

RETURNING SHIPS

A ship that would be destroyed under normal circumstances will return to the simulation and continue battling. To do so, during the following Planning Phase, the ship’s owner sets the ship up in his starting area, but not within Range 1 of any other ship, and continues play as normal.
When the ship returns to battle it comes into play with its Shields restored to its starting value -1 for each Critical Hit Token on its Ship Card.

NOTE: Any Upgrades that were stolen or assimilated from the ship do not return to that ship when it returns to battle.

Recent stuff.

This is what I saw when I came out of a restaurant recently.
of course I had only minutes to get back to work...

Hello All,

Another week another update. This last week was quite productive as far as geek and hobby stuff...

National Tabletop Day 2015

Last Saturday I had a chance to run a demo of Start Trek Attack wing at Comics and Games Fairfax
It went pretty well. I showed the game to several folks and managed to get two guys to play a game using the USS Enterprise D and the Klingon Mat'ha Battle Cruiser. It was a vicious battle and in the end the Klingons were victorious!

The moment the tide turned.
While I was there I picked up these nice game mats for an upcoming D&D game.

Miniatures

I started working on a conversion for the Skaven army

The Brood Horror

A little chop work on the warlord

Close up

The Gun is from the Empire Engineer

I used Apoxie sculpt to make braces for the stolen Elf
stone that powers the Horror as it is corrupted
I also managed to get some work done on my LOTR "Army of the Dead

Finished pictures to come
Speaking of things Tolkien...
