Boats, Boats, Boats

Hello All,

Time for another Boat update. I am making real progress on the Age of Sail ships having finished 4 of the 6. The viking ships are built but I have not started painting them. Remember that these are for the 2016 NOVA Open Age of Sigmar Sea Battle!

Bright colors are the Order of the day

contrasting deck colors

Were going to need a bigger boat

Who's afraid?

Better pictures than last time for this one.

There is a reference in all of these ships.

Just 8 more to go and a month till the event.

Till next time,

Another ship update

NOT THAT KIND OF SHIP!
Hello All,

This is just a quick update on the latest ship to be made seaworthy for the NOVA Open 2016 Age of Sigmar Sea Battle!

Sleek and fast this War Sloop darts between it's enemies looking for it's next target.

A closer look at the sail hints at it's name

Old School D&D players might have already figured it out...

Let me know what you think the name is in the comments below.

Ships Update

Hello All,

Just a quick update on the Ship project from last month.
The 5 age of sail ships are assembled and only the masts remain to be built.

Yes that is a Dragon Skull on the middle one.
I have also been working on the Ironclads especially this one that I think will be popular

Primed white

Base Yellow

Shading added

I call it the Liverpool class Ironclad SS George Dunning.

Well that's it for now.

Age of Sigmar Ship building part 2 ( the scratch built Ships)

Hello All,

Last time I showed you ships we are working on that are puzzle kits and made from the leftovers of the puzzle kits. I also mention bigger ships so here they are! First up the war galleons for the Good Guys. Your basic Age of sail wide mobile battle platform made famous by the Spanish centuries ago.

These are what we will be working on this Saturday at the NOVA Open Build session!

1. Basic body design- The body was made from 1” pink construction foam cut into a basic ship shape 15” long and 5” wide. 2 of these are used for each ship. The first becoming the body and the second cut up to become the fore and aft castles. The fore castle is 2” tall while the aft is 3” tall.

2. Glue the fore and aft castle in place and allow to dry.

3. Once dry break out the wire cutter and shave the sides to make them uniform.

Doesn't really change much at this point
4. Use a ball point pen and a ruler to make the deck boards from the pink foam.

5. Using the templates provided make 4 copies of the long template and 2 of the short one out of heavy card stock.

6. One set of 2 long and one short get glued to the foam

7. The second set of templates is cut into strips to make the outer planking of the Galleon.

8. Leftover card is cut into strips to make planking for the inner walls.

9. Make “corner covers” to fix/hide where planks meet. Pictures

10. Add Mast- Still in Development

Here is what the mast-less design looks like.

Up Next Ironclads!

We had some extra parts left over last time so I asked Bobby to take a stab at an Ironclad design and this is what he came up with!

The Iron Clads
1. Basic body design- The body was made from 1” pink construction foam cut into a basic Viking ship shape 15” long and 5” wide. 1 and 2 inch foam are used to make “boat house” and fore and aft “Turrets”

2. Once the pieces have been glued in place and allowed to dry use sand paper to round the hard edges and give it a submarine like appearance.

3. Using a ball point pen and a ruler make plate lines and rivets to give the appearance the ship was put together in sections.

4. Use a small disk (I used a 25mm round base) to make port holes and a hatch for the boat house.

5. The design is pretty much done here just paint and play

Just needs some details

Well That is it for now. I hope to see you at Neal's on Saturday!

Age of Sigmar Ships!

Hello All,

Today we are talking about ships. Specifically ships designed for use with AOS. As part of a really cool project for this year's NOVA Open the Building team has started working on two fleets for the Age of Sigmar Narrative event. I have also been informed that the Hobbit (Lord of the Rings) Strategy battle game will also feature Shipborne action in the form of the dreaded Black Fleet!

In the latest post on the Road To NOVA pictures were posted that show the beginning of the Armada.
What I present below id a side project for this event.

The Raider-

The Raider is a small fast attack craft designed to get close and board larger ships.  For it's size it can hold a large amount of troops.

The Raider is based on a late 13th century Scottish/Irish design that can trace it's origin to the Vikings several centuries earlier. My design has to take miniature bases into account so you will see the differences, but the concepts are the same.

The basic concept
The design is based on left over pieces from my second project The attack sloop (more on this later) I had to remove the bottom of the Sloop model so it would sit flat on the table. Some of the leftovers became the bottom of the Raider and the mast. The rest was made with card stock. Following design concepts from the old Warhammer General's compendium I build the sides with a single piece of card.

I then made card planks and added those to give it mass and help it look right. I added some card planks to the bottom to make it look more authentic. at each end I added card covers to hide where the card sections came together.  Then I primed it black

Using my airbrush I went over it with Vallejo burnt umber paint them Vallejo wood Brown and finally Vallejo wood brown mixed with a little Vallejo light grey. the mast (which is removable) was treated the same.

The peg near the base of the mast helps with the sail
The Sail was made from paper and was an extra from the sloop. I started by painting it blue

Then masked it so I could add stripes

Stripes painted black

After going through my collection of stencils I decided a dragon would fit the bill. I only have a Chinese style in my collection but what the heck it is fantasy after all. :)

I tied the finished sail to the mast and just like that the Raider was ready to start it's adventure!

Prior to adding the sail

Ready for action

Back of the sail

Adventure here we come!

Loaded down with angry Abyssal (Chaos) Dwarfs

Can hold 17 models on 20 mm bases 15 on 25 mm bases

The Sloop (Johannes Eszett)

The other project I have going is the War Sloop. The origin is a three mast ship wooden puzzle from Micheal's. I had to modify the design so it would lay flat (as I said above.)  I also modified the design to be a single mast sloop since the boat is smaller than the other ships we are working on. It looks fast so I think it will fit well. when I paint it I intend to hide the scale differences as much as possible.

Well that's it for now.
