OP Month Two- announcement from TO

The Star Trek Attack Wing (STAW) Resistance is Futile (RiF) Organized Play (OP) Event for Month Two: Unimatrix Zero will be held at Fairfax Games and Comics on Sunday, November 16, 2014 starting at 1 pm. The store opens at Noon. Please arrive early to get your blind booster pack and decide which ship/cards to use. The contents of all five blind boosters are listed online. We can’t find the link anymore, so the next blog post will have them all listed. I recommend deciding ahead of time what you will use with your fleet(s) for each of the boosters, so that you are prepared no matter which ship you receive.
There are four documents from WizKids that are relevant to this OP: the initial rules description, the rules clarification posted 9/30/14, the alternative rules posted 9/26/14, and the updated suggested tournament format posted 10/24/14.  I recommend reading all of these.

Customization:
Point 1    I have some reservations about the new suggested tournament format as it applies to Borg fleets. I’m concerned that it isn’t reasonable to restrict something like a Tactical Cube to less than 60 points. I agree that 80-90 point cubes are brutal, but can you really get your points’ worth out of a cube at 52 points? Unimatrix Zero seems like a good time to test the theory, so I’m implementing the updated suggested tournament format and I am NOT altering it at all.
Clarification: In talking to Bob, I realized that we had different interpretations of this rule. I thought that the ship build maximum was increased by 8 points (to 58 points) for any ship over 43 points. Bob believes that any ship over 43 points gets 8 additional points (51 point ceiling for a 43 point ship) for captain, upgrades, and resources that are applied directly to the ship. In considering the point, it makes sense that WizKids was probably thinking along the same lines as Bob. After all, ship costs are always even numbers, so why did they pick 43? And 43 is the first number that exceeds the 50 point ceiling when 8 points are added to it. Therefore, the ruling for November is that we will have a 50 point maximum per ship and any ships over 43 points may take up to 8 points in captains, upgrades, or resources.

Point 2    It has been my experience that most players that come to the Fairfax Games and Comics store have Borg  ships/cards and I don’t think this scenario will play as nicely with only one fleet. Based on the personalities of the people that come to my store, I’m betting they would want to tailor separate Borg and Rebel fleets. Therefore, I will NOT be implementing the Alternative Gameplay option of Players Bring 1 Fleet. I repeat, everyone should bring TWO fleets: one Borg and one Rebel.

Point 3    You will only have one blind booster for the competition. However, you are free to organize the options from that pack into two separate configurations: one for the Borg fleet and one for the Rebel fleet. You will NOT be allowed to make changes between rounds, though. So, if you play the Borg Fleet in Round 1 and Round 3, your blind booster ship needs to be in the same configuration in Round 3 that it was for Round 1.

Point 4    In the Alternative Rules, there is a bullet point that says that the Borg Fleet may take an action to discard a mission Token from a ship in order to remove one normal damage card. This makes no sense. All Borg ships have Regenerate. Even if the ship is NOT a “Borg” ship, if it is in the Borg Fleet, then it gains the Regenerate action. My read of this text is that you have to have an action to take and you need to spend a mission token. Why spend your mission token when you can just use the Regenerate action? There’s only one circumstance that I can think of where this makes any sense. If the ship has two actions available to it, then it could spend one of them to use the ship’s regenerate and the second one to enact this special regeneration (which costs a mission token). Thus, you could reclaim two hull points in one turn, but you’d give up 8 fleet points in the process. At this time I am disinclined to allow this rule to be used. If someone has an argument for using it, I will reconsider.

Point 5    Ranking and pairing. Yikes! Let’s just make it a little more complicated, since we don’t have enough confusion as it is. J I would really very much appreciate it if people could sign up prior to the event, so that I can try to have all the pairings worked out for the first round before arriving at the store. The three players from last month’s event will be ranked 1-3 this month. If anyone else shows up who played in the previous tournament, I will rank you (against each other) based on your overall standing in those three games. So, the highest you will be placed is 4th. If you have not played in any of the last four events at this store, that’s OK, too. Please note that these initial ranks are for the purposes of deciding who will play which fleet starting out and they have absolutely no effect on your ultimate standing for battle points/fleet points in the Unimatrix Zero Event.

Point 6    As you can probably tell from above, I’m planning to give the pairings guidelines from the original rules a shot. However, I reserve the right to dump those rules in a heartbeat and use the Alternative Player Matching rules released on 9/26 if I determine that they will be easier, or make more sense.

Point 7    Going back to the point about registering ahead of time…The rules for fleet building in this OP are unique. You won’t be able to go to a website like Dracos and have it do the work for you. Also, it’s been my experience that people don’t really check the math on their opponent’s builds when they are looking them over. To promote fairness, I encourage players to email me their lists ahead of time, so I can vet the builds. I’ll check to make sure the right number/type of upgrade are used and that the SP adjustments are factored in correctly. This will allow me to assure all the players that the vetted lists had no oversights.

Bob is on the board of directors for a local wargaming convention called Nova Open. You’ve probably heard him talk about it. Well, one year, this kid named Tony won the first place at the main tournament. (There are several tournaments for different systems going on simultaneously each year.) After he won, it turned out that he’d done his math wrong and he was 3 points over the limit. As a result, he received the nickname C3PO (for 3 points over, I’m not sure what the C was supposed to stand for. Maybe “clearly”. J) Anyway, a lot of people said it was no big deal and three points didn’t make that much difference when the point total was 2,000. But other people said he cheated and it there were sour grapes and a lot of nastiness. The next year, he came back and won again, but with a list that was exactly three points under the total, just to thumb his nose at his detractors.

Well, three points isn’t a big deal when the total is 2,000, that’s true. But it makes a very big difference when the total is only 120. I don’t want anyone claiming that someone cheated and I don’t want anyone kicking themselves later for not taking an SP credit that they were due.

Please note that the WizKids official forum  is now live. I hope to see you at the next event!

Attack Wing Tournament Announcement

From the Wizkids website

Star Trek: Attack Wing – Updated Suggested Tournament Format

Hello Star Trek: Attack Wing Players,
We wanted to say thank you for coming out to the Wizkids Opens and the ongoing in-store tournament support. The people we’ve met and the enthusiasm for the product is wonderful to see and we truly appreciate your support for this exciting and growing product. We have spoken with a number of you and are excited to announce a few changes that we believe will improve the experience for in-store organized play.
First off, in the coming months we hope to have an official rules forum set up similar to our HeroClix rules forum on wizkidseventsystem.com. We will also be doing this for our D&D Attack Wing game. Just as a reminder, you will need an account in our WizKids Event System to interact on this forum. We hope you will be patient as we set this up and understand that there may be delays in getting to everyone’s questions.
Additionally, we are going to be making a rather significant change to our suggested tournament format. Starting in November, we suggest that all tournaments have a minimum of 3 ships per player (for games that are 90 to 120 points) and a maximum point value of 50 points on a ship(after all cards are assigned to it) except if the base ship value is higher than 43 points. If the base ship cost is higher than 43 points you can still play the ship with the addition of up to 8 points for upgrades or a captain.
Additionally, we will be issuing an errata for the FAQ: Kuvak is a Vulcan Captain.
—
SUGGESTED TOURNAMENT FORMAT
• 120 Points per fleet
• 3 Ships per fleet
• 50 Points maximum per ship (at the start of the game) including all upgrades, captains, admirals, and resources assigned to the ship. During game play, it might be possible that you will exceed 50 points through game effects that let you steal or add upgrades to your ship.
• If your ship’s base cost is 43 points or more you may add up to 8 Points for upgrades (Crew, Tech, Weapons, and Borg) or a captain even if those cards bring your cost over 50 points.
• If there is a Blind Booster, 30 of your available Fleet Points are reserved for use with game elements from your Blind Booster leaving 90 points to build your fleet. The game elements in your Blind Booster may not be mixed with the 90 points from the rest of your fleet.  The Blind Booster ship counts toward the 3 ships minimum.

Back from a break

Hello All,

I decided to take some time off from updating this blog (and the the Road to NOVA as well) for some much needed rest. During that time I have managed to get more settled into the new place and have gotten some hobby work done.

An attack wing event is coming up in two weeks so expect and entry or two for that but this one is about hobby projects.

So here we go.

 Attack Wing Ships

I decided to lay out my collection a few weeks ago to see what it looked like.

I also repainted several of the ships I picked up at the NOVA Open.

The display board was from the NOVA Open Silent auction
Lastly I painted up a couple of ships I already had but thought they could use some Love

I have also worked on a few non ships for games like Fantasy, Warmachine, 40K and Hobbit

Chaos Dwarf and Great Bull Taurus

Khazad Guard

Warmachine Mercenary

Truthsayer

Ork Big Mek

Well that's it for now

Have a great holiday weekend...

Attack Wing Tournament 9-14-2014

Hello All,

Last Sunday was the third in a three part event I ran at Comics and Games Fairfax. If you have been here in the last few months you will have noticed all the Attack Wing posts. This has quickly become my favorite game (Mostly because the wife likes it.) It's simple set up and breakdown make it really work for me.  The game mechanics are solid and Wizkids have managed to put their own flavor on essentially the same game as X wing by Fantasy Flight Games.

The Event (all three parts) as a hole went well with only a few hiccups along the way. (The Wizkids system breaking down, Internet troubles, Clerical errors, and late starts)I ended up with 15 different players averaging 6 per OP (Organized Play) session.

Here are some pictures from the last OP session. (No Order)

The collective OP 3 FAQ for the locals

Hello All,

I wrote the following for my local event this Sunday and it addresses unanswered questions about this months Tournament event.

Collective Part 3= (Until I get a better answer)

*Note: The Below Applies to the Attack Wing Event on September 14th 2014 at Comics and Games Fairfax. This is a list of questions about the OP 3 event that have not been answered on the official FAQ at the time of this writing. The objective of this document is to be consistent and not ruin anyone’s fun.

1a) If a card like Muon Feedback Wave is the reason a Borg token is destroyed would the player using that ability get credit for the destruction?

YES: This is because the root of the damage that is caused by the effect comes from the player that used the Muon Feedback Wave (or similar effect), thus they should get the credit.

1b) If yes to question 1, what happens if both players have Muon tokens on the Borg token and it is destroyed, which player gets credit for the kill?

Damage to the BCT/BST should be applied in the same order that the Upgrades were used(. Whoever scored the “Killing Blow” gets the credit.

For example, let’s assume that Player 1 has initiative and both players placed a Muon token on the BST. The BST moves 4 straight, so it takes 3 points of damage for each token every time it moves. If this damage is responsible for destroying the BST, then determine which point was the “Killing Blow”. The first three points go to Player 1 and the next three count for Player 2. If the BST only needed 1, 2, or 3 points to blow up, then Player 1 gets the credit for the BST’s destruction. If it needed 4, 5, or 6 points, Player 2 gets the credit.

Should the ship that dropped the Muon token (or some similar lasting effect) be destroyed before the BCT/BST, then the effect is still in place and the Player who instigated the effect gets the credit, should it be responsible for the destruction of the BCT/BST.

1c) If a card like Feedback Pulse is the reason a Borg token is destroyed would the player using that ability get credit for the destruction?

YES: The player who used the Feedback Pulse would get credit for the kill. The Root of the effect is caused by the use of the Feedback Pulse. The BCT takes damage because the player used an upgrade. The rules do not specify that it must be an attack that destroys the BCT only who makes the destruction happen.

2) What is the initiative Tiebreaker for the BCT/BST? Do they go before or after players?

The BCT and BST are considered Borg faction for Initiative. The BCT is Captain 10 and the BST is Captain 1. On a tie roll off per the BRB with the non-involved player rolling for the BCT or BST. If a three way tie (both players have Borg ships with captain 10 or 1) occurs, then the TO will roll for the BCT or BST. The results stand for the rest of the game.

3) Does the BCT count as a Captain for the purposes of GenKhan's ability? (i.e., raising his Captain Skill to 10)

YES: “Treat the BCT as if it has a skill of 10” – OP3 Document

4a) Can the BCT/BST be affected by effects that dictate or limit its movement (ex. BTBT (Borg Tractor Beam Token), EDT (Energy Dampening Token), Faked Messages)?

The BCT can be affected by these Upgrades as long as it is not forced to exceed its max move of 3, forced to move in a direction that does NOT contain other ships, or forced to bank or turn. Otherwise it fails.

The BST is not affected as it must move exactly 4 every turn until time expires, it is destroyed, or leaves the board.

4b) If so, how do they affect what direction the BCT moves (more relevant for the latter two above) ?

Per the OP3 rules, the BCT/BST can only move in straight lines. The BCT moves 1, 2, or 3 either N, S, E, or W. The BST moves 4 straight toward the furthest board edge from its starting point.

5) Do "Cannot Attack This Round" effects (like Projected Stasis Field) apply as normal to the BCT/BST?

I see no reason why Projected Stasis Field can’t be used on the BST, BCT, or an opponent’s ship. Other cases may need to be review in specific. Please address any concerns to the TO prior to the start of play.

6) How do you determine directions based on the statement "The BCT must always move in the direction of an enemy ship..." ? Should the rules from OP1 be used? The OP 1 rules are not repeated in OP 3.

OP1 rules were to help the BCT move in a logical (to the event) way. In OP3, one of the players controls the BCT and can move it 1, 2, or 3 in one of four directions N, S, E, or W. As long as the BCT’s end point is closer to at least 1 ship than it’s starting location(to the same ship), then it is a valid move.

7) If a Borg Tac Cube bumps a BCT does it still get actions? (since the BCT doesn't have a hull value >= 6)

This question was poorly written, so the question itself is subject to interpretation. Two separate versions of the question have been re-written below to allow for clarification. The answers below assume that this question was probably inspired by the instructions for what happens when the BCT overlaps another ship during the BCT’s activation. Please note that, in those instructions, the criterion is whether or not the overlapped ship has a Hull value of greater than (NOT greater than or equal to) seven (7), not six (6).

7a) If a Borg Tactical Cube (as part of a player’s fleet) bumps the BCT, does [the BCT] still get actions?

NO: The rule only applies if the BCT bumps another ship during the BCT’s movement.
*Besides the BCT gets no actions anyway
J *

7b) If a Borg Tactical Cube (as part of a player’s fleet) bumps the BCT, does [the player’s cube] still get actions?

NO: The rule only applies if the BCT bumps another ship during the BCT’s movement. If a player is controlling a tactical cube and runs into the BCT, then the player loses his actions that round for having maneuvered into an ship, unless he has an Upgrade that allows him to ignore that affect (e.g., Federation: Ilia).
